D. C. Hobson is a full time writer who draws on a lifetime spent collecting places, people, conversations, and the small details that refuse to disappear.

Based in Australia but shaped by decades of travelling through the world, the work moves between literary fiction, travel writing, and stories that are often difficult to place neatly in either category. From the familiar streets of Paris to cities, islands, markets, bars, railway stations and unexpected corners across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, place is rarely just scenery. It becomes witness, accomplice and sometimes character: somewhere memory shifts, strangers collide, and ordinary moments acquire significance only after they have passed.

The fiction is character-driven and concerned with the quieter architecture of people’s lives: ageing, desire, loneliness, friendship, regret, reinvention, and the distance between what people say and what they mean. Recent work has increasingly centred on women navigating the subtle turning points of their lives, while longer fiction is exploring the more complicated territory of intimacy, friendship, truth and the stories people construct about themselves.

Alongside fiction, the travel writing is less interested in telling people where to go than in what happens when they get there. It wanders through the celebrated and the overlooked, following the mythology of travel into the considerably messier business of actually being somewhere: getting lost, watching people, chasing stories, misunderstanding things, finding the unexpected and occasionally discovering that the smallest encounter is the one that survives the journey. Humour is never far away.

After years of writing around the edges of other things, writing is now the work.

The stories remain interested in much the same question: how can something seemingly insignificant—a conversation, a room, a stranger, a morning, a city street—quietly divide a life into before and after?

New fiction and essays are currently circulating with literary journals in Australia and internationally, while work continues on a first novel.
